PARKING 101
Parking at IU can be a challenge! There is limited space availability in most zones on campus and front door parking is rare. We hope this parking "primer" will help you to avoid confusion, frustration and maybe a ticket or towing charge.
• ALL students operating a motor vehicle on University property, including fraternity and sorority, must register the vehicle. There exists the unfortunate misconception that anyone can park anywhere after 5:00 PM. This simply is untrue and many students have incurred numerous fines because of this belief. See the section on Regulations-Abridged.
• All permits with the exception of Dorm permits are oversold. The purchase of a parking permit DOES NOT guarantee a parking space. When parking on campus, bring a map, familiarize yourself with parking options and always have a back up plan.
• Once you’ve found a place to park, the easiest way to move from class to class is to walk. The traffic on campus during a class change can be complete gridlock!
• Permits are sold for a specific zone. If you are unsure of where you may or may not park, please ask us.
• If your vehicle becomes disabled on campus and you are unable to move it, contact Parking Enforcement immediately. They will need your name, student ID number, a description of your vehicle, license plate number, state issuing the plate and where you’re parked.
• All lots have signs indicating the type of permit allowed. It is very important to read and understand the signs.
• If you lend your vehicle, you will still be held responsible for any tickets issued to it.
• If you need to temporarily drive another vehicle other than the one you have permitted, you must come into the office and obtain a temporary permit.
• We identify tickets first by permit number. If you do not have a permit displayed, we will identify it by license plate number.
When this happens, often the ticket is identified to a parent, but we assume the student is operating the vehicle on campus and we will bill you.
• WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR TICKETS REMOVED FROM YOUR VEHICLE. Some people will walk along and remove tickets from vehicles just to be funny, or they will place them on their own vehicle to prevent from getting a ticket. If you were parked incorrectly (or if your meter is out of time) but you didn’t find a ticket on your automobile, call us the next day with your license plate number and we can tell you if you received a ticket. Better yet, avoid parking illegally.
• Parking late at night at some residence halls or near some fraternities and sororities can be frustrating. Often, when you return late at night, the lots are full and overflow parking is distant. Try to travel with friends or arrange to be dropped off.
• It is widely believed that one can park anywhere after 5:00 PM without a permit. This assumption is false and many have incurred fines because of it.
Employees
• Arrive on campus before 8:00 AM. Most convenient faculty/staff spaces are occupied after 8:00 AM
OUR BEST ADVICE
If you have a question about parking, don’t ask your RA, your roommate, your friend whose sister went to IU back in the 70’s, or your mom. ASK PARKING OPERATIONS! We are not responsible for information you get from anyone but us. This page highlights only some of the more important things you should know about parking on campus. We urge you to read either through our brochures or the information on this web site and become familiar with all of the parking rules. Once you purchase a permit, you are responsible for knowing the rules and regulations.
