What is the Guaranteed Ride Home program?
Though you may never need it (and we hope you won’t), you have a ride home if an emergency ever strikes. When unpredictable circumstances arise, the Guaranteed Ride Home (GRH) program provides free taxi service home for all IU employees enrolled in the IU RideShare Program. Learn more about the RideShare Program at IU.

Guaranteed Ride Home (GRH) is available when:
- You or an immediate family member gets sick or has a severe crisis or emergency.
- Your carpool driver has to unexpectedly leave work early or stay late.
- You must work unscheduled overtime.
- Your carpool vehicle experiences mechanical problems.

To qualify for GRH, you must:
- Be an IU employee enrolled in the IU RideShare Program.
- Have shared a ride to work on the day the ride is needed.
How does the Guaranteed Ride Home program work?
GRH is an insurance program offering commuters free taxi rides home in the event of personal emergency. You may use this service three times per semester (up to six times per academic year). The GRH program is available Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. - 9 p.m. Parking Operations will pay the taxi fare for the first 50 miles of your trip home.
There are certain restrictions:
- You must have shared a ride to work on the day the ride is needed. A voucher is only valid on the day that it is issued.
- You may share the ride with another passenger, but the other passenger must pay their own fare. If the other passenger is also eligible for the GRH program, they must obtain their own voucher and authorization number.
- You must pay for the driver's tip (customarily 10-15%) as well as any additional miles exceeding the 50 mile limit.
