Guaranteed Ride Home

What is the Guaranteed Ride Home program?

Though you may never need it (and we hope you won’t), you have a ride home if an emergency ever strikes. When unpredictable circumstances arise, the Guaranteed Ride Home (GRH) program provides free taxi service home for all IU employees enrolled in the IU RideShare Program. Learn more about the RideShare Program at IU.

To qualify for GRH, you must:

  • Be an IU employee enrolled in the IU RideShare Program.
  • Have shared a ride to work on the day the ride is needed.

How does the Guaranteed Ride Home program work?

GRH is an insurance program offering commuters free taxi rides home in the event of personal emergency. You may use this service three times per semester (up to six times per academic year). The GRH program is available Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. - 9 p.m. Parking Operations will pay the taxi fare for the first 50 miles of your trip home.

There are certain restrictions:

  • You must have shared a ride to work on the day the ride is needed. A voucher is only valid on the day that it is issued.
  • You may share the ride with another passenger, but the other passenger must pay their own fare. If the other passenger is also eligible for the GRH program, they must obtain their own voucher and authorization number.
  • You must pay for the driver's tip (customarily 10-15%) as well as any additional miles exceeding the 50 mile limit.

How do I use the Guaranteed Ride Home program?

  1. Get authorization: Call the Parking Operations Office at (812) 855-9849 and provide your name and IU University ID number. Once the attendant determines that you are eligible, you will be assigned a voucher number. The attendant will then transfer your call to Yellow Cab so that you may make pick-up arrangements.
  2. Print and complete a voucher: Print and complete a Taxicab Voucher (pdf) form. Be sure to include your IU University ID and voucher authorization number. Give the form to the cab driver when he/she arrives.
  3. On the way home: If you need to pick up your child from school or daycare, or need to fill a prescription, no problem! You are permitted one side trip on the way home to take care of emergency business. GRH is at your service so you never have to worry about finding a ride when you need it most.
