STUDENT BUS DRIVER

Steps to Becoming an IU Campus Bus Driver

1.            Go to www.iucareers.com  and fill out the electronic application for a bus operator (bus driver) position at IU Campus Bus Service.

2.            We will contact you within 5 business days to set up an interview.

3.            If, after the interview, you meet our requirements and you already have a Commercial Drivers License, Class B with a Passenger Endorsement then we will schedule you for a federally mandated pre-employment alcohol and drug screening.  If you pass the alcohol and drug screening and also pass a criminal background and a safe driving record review, we will schedule you for our training program.

4.                 If, after the interview, you meet our requirements, but you do not have a Commercial Driver License, Class B with a Passenger Endorsement, then you will need to get a Commercial Driver’s License Learner’s Permit and D.O.T. physical exam.  If you have a current CDL and physical and need a passenger endorsement, you need to take the Public Passenger written test to get a permit to begin training.

5.            Go to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles License Branch, 1612 Liberty Dr., Bloomington.  Remember to bring your Social Security card with you.  Call 336-3018 to confirm their hours.  Tell them you need a CDL.  Be sure to get a DOT physical form and the CDL Learner’s Guide to study for the written and skills test.

6.            Get the physical exam.  You are responsible for the cost of the physical. This can be done at IU Student Health Center, Prompt Care or any doctor’s office. A copy of the physical form must be sent to Indianapolis.  If it wasn’t done at the physician’s office, it can be done at the Campus Bus office.  Keep the completed form with you at all times when you drive a commercial vehicle.

7.            Study for the written exam.

8.               Return to the License Branch with the completed DOT physical form.  Take the written tests for General Knowledge, Passenger Transport, and Air Brakes.  After you pass the tests, you will be issued a CDL Learner’s Permit.  You are responsible for the cost of the permit

9.            When you have your CDL Learner’s Permit, please return to the Campus Bus Service office and we will schedule you for a federally mandated drug and alcohol screening as well as conduct a criminal background check and safe driving record review.  If you pass all of these background checks, we will schedule you for our training program.  At this point you will be placed on the IU Campus Bus Service payroll.  The training rate is $9.87.

9.            After passing the Skills Test your Learner’s Permit will be changed to a regular CDL.  There is no charge for the final CDL.  With the regular CDL you can begin in-service training with a route driver on the regular Campus Bus Service routes.

10            You should be fully through the training program within 4 to 6 weeks.  After you have successfully completed training you will be reimbursed for the cost of the CDL and DOT physical.

11.            Drive Safely!
